Sacraments

Baptism

For Catholics, the Sacrament of Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship. Whether we are baptized as infants or adults, Baptism is the Church's way of celebrating and enacting the embrace of God.

For Infants:  At St. John Vianney the Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of each month after the 11:30 AM mass.  Call Linda Polucha at 401-334-1016 to register your child.  Once registered, you will receive a call or visit from a member of the Elizabeth Ministry.

For Adults:  See R.C.I.A for more information

Reconciliation

The Catholic Sacrament of Reconciliation (also known as the Sacrament of Penance, or Penance and Reconciliation) has three elements: conversion, confession and celebration. In it we find God's unconditional forgiveness, and as a result we are called to forgive others.

Reconciliation is available at St. John Vianney on Saturdays at 4:00 PM

Students in Grade 2 prepare for and celebrate their First Penance.  Contact Pat Draper for more religious education details.

Eucharist

Catholics believe the Eucharist, or Communion, is both a sacrifice and a meal. We believe in the real presence of Jesus, who died for our sins. As we receive Christ's Body and Blood, we also are nourished spiritually and brought closer to God.

Students in Grade 3 prepare for and celebrate the Sacrament of First Eucharist.  Contact Pat Draper for more religious education details.

Confirmation

Confirmation is a Catholic sacrament of mature Christian commitment and a deepening of baptismal gifts. Like Baptism and Eucharist, it is a Sacrament of Initiation for Catholics and a Sacrament of faith in God's fidelity to us.

Students in Grade 10 prepare for and celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation.  Contact Erin Blais for more religious education details.

Marriage

For Catholics, the Sacrament of Marriage, or Holy Matrimony, is a public sign that one gives oneself totally to this other person. It is also a public statement about God: the loving union of husband and wife speaks of family values and also God's values.

To schedule a wedding at St. John Vianney, contact Fr. Raymond Theroux.  Dates are usually booked one year in advance.  Once a date is set you will work closely with Linda Polucha who will help your coordinate the details of your wedding.  Couples are expected to complete Pre-Cana, a preparation course on marriage.

Holy Orders

In the Sacrament of Holy Orders, or Ordination, the priest being ordained vows to lead other Catholics by bringing them the sacraments (especially the Eucharist), by proclaiming the Gospel, and by providing other means to holiness.

If you think God is calling you to be a priest, visit the website of the Office of Vocations in the Diocese of Providence at www.catholicpriest.com or call Fr. Michael Najim at 401-831-8011.

Anointing of the Sick

The Catholic sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is a ritual of healing appropriate not only for physical but also for mental and spiritual sickness.

Call Father Ray to schedule this sacrament.  Communal anointing will be announced.
